What's new

Hey everyone! John here. Mic Drop is a hobby project I work on in bursts. When I make meaningful updates to the game, I write about them here.

If there's a change you'd like to see, feel free to send me an email.

Play on your own

  • There's an arcade-style one-player mode now. You can start a one-player game by starting a game when you're the only one in a room.
  • In one-player mode, you get a word and 10 seconds to think of a song containing it, and the run ends when the clock does. You get three skips per run. Claiming a word pauses the run so you can actually sing it. Try to beat your personal best, or play with friends for a co-op experience!

Clearer rules

  • How to Play has been rewritten and now covers both modes.

New look

  • Mic Drop got a redesign: darker, warmer, and a little more polish.
  • How to Play now walks through a real game, with screenshots of each step.
  • Links you paste into a group chat unfurl with a new preview image.

Invites, leaving, and rejoining

  • Getting friends into a room is one tap now: share an invite link and it drops them straight into your lobby, no code to read out loud. You can still copy-and-paste the room code, which was the old way, or share the URL from your browser bar.
  • There's a real Leave button now. If you leave by accident, rejoining puts you back in your seat with your score intact.
  • Your screen stays awake while you play, so your phone stops locking halfway through a round.
  • Create Room and Join Room are proper pages, so the back button does what you expect.

Mic Drop, rebuilt

  • Refreshing the page no longer throws you out of the game. Your seat, your score, and the round in progress all survive.
  • Games survive server restarts, so shipping an update no longer ends everyone's game mid-round.
  • Two players can use the same name without breaking the room.
  • Play Again no longer crashes the game.
  • Round results actually appear at the end of a round.

Skips, confetti, and the rules

  • A Skip button for words nobody can do anything with, on a 15-second timer.
  • Confetti when you score, and a great deal more of it when you win.
  • The rules are on the site, and the most impossible words are out of the word list.
